Abayomi,Taiwo A; Ofusori,David A; Ayoka,Oladele A; Odukoya,Samson A; Omotoso,Emmanuel O; Amegor,Frank O; Ajayi,Sunday A; Ojo,Gideon B; Oluwayinka,Oladele P.
This study assessed the micro anatomical differences in the tongue of rat, bat and pangolin with a view to establishing the functional anatomical differences of these mammalian tongues on their dietary pattern. Ten rats, ten bats and ten pangolins were used for this study. The animals were sacrificed and the tongue excised and processed for light microscopical study adopting the following stains: Haematoxylin Eosin, Verhoeff Gieson and Masson trichrome. The results showed non papillation of the keratinized stratified epithelium of pangolin tongue unlike the papillation seen in the tongue of the rat and bat. While the filiform papillation seen in the rat was bristle like, the filiform papillae in the bat were crown-like. There was also an unusual dense...

The Laser used correctly in the medical practice offers clear advantages compared with traditional therapies. The improvement and even the elimination of many significant skin lesions can be achieved with reduced risks to patients. However, it is important to keep security measures and understand the possible effects on an experimental model. The chick embryo is a good model to evaluate the direct effects of non-ionizing radiation for its easy handling and availability. The purpose of this communication is to show our histological findings in organs of the chick embryo with and without protective barrier to be subjected to radiation excimer. We used the following issuers: intense pulsed light (excimer Xe-Cl laser of 308 nm wavelength). It was irradiated...

Characteristics of the Gustatory Organs on the Tongue of the Chinese Fire-bellied Newt (Cynops orientalis): Light and Scanning Electron Microscopy Study International Journal of Morphology
Xie,Zhaohui; Li,Jingting; Cheng,Pu.
The dorsal surface of the tongue gustatory organs of Chinese fire-bellied newt (Cynops orientalis) was observed by employing the light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results revealed that the rostral and median part of the tongue presents a round apex and covered by taste disks (TDs). They are usually roundish or ellipsoidal in shape and are 20-35 mm in diameter. The many openings of the lingual glands are 4-8 mm in diameter exist in the lateral border or median part of lingual body. The gustatory organs on the tongue did not differed form those presented in other species in Caudates. These may indicate the functions of gustatory organs on the tongue related to their life habit.

Clinical, pathological and therapeutic findings on lingual rhabdomyosarcoma in a dog - case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Dias,F.G.G.; Santilli,J.; Magalhães,G.M.; Calazans,S.G.; Pereira,L.F.; Mattos Junior,E.; Honsho,C.S.; Alves,C.E.F.; Dias,L.G.G.G..
ABSTRACT The biological behaviour of the tumours vary according to the species in which they occur, its location within the cavity, clinical stage and histopathological nature. Lingual neoplasms are generally uncommon in companion animals. Rhabdomyosarcomas are malignant, solid, aggressive formations with high metastatic potential. The clinical signs are variable and a definitive diagnosis can only be reached through histopathological analysis of biopsy and necropsy specimen. In some cases, immunohistochemical study may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. This paper aims to highlight important points about this uncommon condition in dogs, using a case report of lingual rhabdomyosarcoma, which showed no evidence of metastasis after diagnosis, nor of local...

Extraoral Ligature of Lingual Artery: Anatomic and Topographic Study International Journal of Morphology
Lins,Carla Cabral dos Santos Accioly; Cavalcanti,Jennecy Sales; do Nascimento,Daniela Lira.
The lingual artery constitutes one of the branches of the external carotid artery, which is responsible for the vascularization of the tongue and neighbour regions. The hemorrhage caused by a lesion of the lingual artery can occur during a dental procedure (surgical accidents by the use of an instrument or rotating disc), by trauma, biopsy and dental implant. In some cases is difficult to stop the hemorrhage of injured vase, so is necessary to realize the extraoral ligature of this artery. Hence, this work studied the anatomic aspects of the lingual artery, by forty-eight dissections of twenty-four corpses settled in formol 10%, aiming to detail the origin, pathway and anatomic relations of the lingual artery in the region of anterior trigone of the neck,...

Oliveira,A.R.; Souza,T.D.; Flecher,M.C.; Gardiner,C.H.; Santos,R.L..
ABSTRACT This is the first report of parasitism by Gongylonema sp. in a free-ranging callitrichid from the Atlantic forest of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A juvenile male of Geoffroy's marmoset (Callithrix geoffroyi) was euthanized due to poor prognosis, then necropsied. Samples of the tongue were collected for routine histological processing. Microscopically, there were transversal sections of adult nematodes within the epithelial layer of the mucosa of the tongue. Lingual scraping demonstrated a small number of oval embryonated eggs with a thick capsule. The morphology of the adult parasites and the eggs, associated with its location, were compatible with the Spirurida nematode of the genus Gongylonema. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of...

Morphologic Effects of Filiform Papilla Root on the Lingual Mechanical Functions of Chinese Yellow Cattle International Journal of Morphology
Fu,Jun; Qian,Zhihui; Ren,Luquan.
The morphology of filiform papilla root in the tongue of Chinese yellow cattle were studied by scanning electron microscopy, and several geometric models were established to analyze the possible effects of such structures on lingual mechanical functions. Conical and tongue-like filiform papillae were detected in different locations on the lingual surface, along with six types of root structures. A lingual groove surrounded the papillae in five of these structures. To date, such grooves have not been discussed in studies on bovine lingual morphology, and those distributed on the dorsal surface of the lingual apex can limit the motion ranges of filiform papillae. Two secondary papillae emerged from a groove on the dorsal surface of the lingual apex's caudal...
